A revision of the new world species of Gymnoclasiopa Hendel (Diptera, Ephydridae)

2012

Species of the shore-fly genus Gymnoclasiopa Hendel from the New World are revised, including G. grecorum, sp. n. (Alaska. Juneau: Gastineau Channel, Thane Road (S Juneau; 58°16.9’N, 134°22.4’W)) and G. matanuska, sp. n. (Alaska. Matanuska-Susitna: Palmer (Matanuska River; 61°36.5’N, 149°04.1’W)). We also clarify the status of previously described species, including those now discovered to have Holarctic distributions and/or for which sexual dimorphism was not appreciated and the species was described twice, including G. montana (Cresson) as a syn. n. of G. bohemanni (Becker). Two species, G. bella (Mathis), comb. n., and G. chiapas (Mathis), comb. n., are transferred from Ditrichophora to …

CD38-Specific Biparatopic Heavy Chain Antibodies Display Potent Complement-Dependent Cytotoxicity Against Multiple Myeloma Cells

2018

CD38 is overexpressed by multiple myeloma cells and has emerged as a target for therapeutic antibodies. Nanobodies are soluble single domain antibody fragments derived from the VHH variable domain of heavy chain antibodies naturally occurring in camelids. We previously identified distinct llama nanobodies that recognize three non-overlapping epitopes of the extracellular domain of CD38. Here, we fused these VHH domains to the hinge, CH2, and CH3 domains of human IgG1, yielding highly soluble chimeric llama/human heavy chain antibodies (hcAbs). We analyzed the capacity of these hcAbs to mediate complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) to CD38-expressing human multiple myeloma and Burkitt lymp…

New discoveries in New World Atissini as revealed in revision of Pelignellus Sturtevant & Wheeler (Diptera: Ephydridae)

2019

Pelignellus is resurrected from synonymy with Atissa and is revised. The genus and both included species—P. subnudus Sturtevant & Wheeler from the USA (California) and P. freidbergi n. sp. from Central America (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Panama)—are described with an emphasis on structures of the male terminalia, which are fully illustrated. The species are keyed and their distribution data are provided. For perspective and to facilitate recognition of genera and species, the tribe Atissini is diagnosed and a key to genera is provided.

Mapping CAP-A satellite DNAs by FISH in Sapajus cay paraguay and S. macrocephalus (Platyrrhini, Primates)

2023

Satellite DNAs such as Cap-A sequences are potentially informative taxonomic and phylogenetic markers useful for characterizing primate genomes. They have also been used as cytogenetic markers facilitating species identification in many taxa. The aim of this work is to map Cap-A sequences by FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization) on two Platyrrhini (Primates) species genomes, Sapajus cay paraguay and S. macrocephalus, in order to study their distribution pattern on chromosomes. The Cap-A probes showed bright signals with almost the same interstitial pattern of distribution in correspondence with C and CMA3 rich regions on six pairs of chromosomes in both Sapajus species. Ejaculate fractioning effect on llama sperm head morphometry as assessed by the ISAS(®) CASA system.

2013

Contents South American camelid sperm characteristics are poorly known compared with those of other domestic animals. The long-term duration of ejaculation makes difficult to gather all the seminal fluid, implying possible ejaculation portion losses. Thus, the aim of this research was to evaluate the characteristics of the morphology and morphometry of the spermatozoa change during ejaculation. The morphometric characterization was tested on nine specimens of the Lanuda breed, using a special artificial vagina. In five of the animals, a fractioning of the ejaculate was performed by taking samples every 5 min. for a total of 20 min. Air-dried seminal smears were stained with Hemacolor and mo…

Sperm kinematic characterization of alpaca ( Vicugna pacos L.) during the reproductive season

2018

Semen analysis is a key factor when determining the fertility ability in males. South American camelids, and in particular the alpaca, have been studied very little when compared with other farm animals. The aim of this work was to perform the kinematic characterization of alpaca spermatozoa collected directly from the deferent duct by using CASA-Mot (Computer Assisted Semen Analysis for Motility) technology. Samples were obtained every three days throughout the reproductive season during two periods and with a break of seven days in the middle. During both periods, the quality of the sample's motility and kinematics increased over the first two days and then subsequently decreased. This pa…

Krāsas 20. gadsimta antiutopiskajos romānos

2017

CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF THE 2008-2009 INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL CRISIS

2012

The paper investigates the current crisis and its major consequences in a shifting world. Originated from the USA, the crisis spread in the world and disturbed its power distribution. The emerging countries development of the last two decades illustrates the catching-up process. The findings also confirm the increased role of the Chinese economy today. The Chinese growth in comparison with the USA economic path is a mirror for the future world architecture. The consequences of the international financial crisis are focused on the fact that the developed countries will lose gradually their privileges in the shifting of economic power.
